Just searching for the good stuff .
“If all I’m remembered for is being a good basketball player, then I’ve done a bad job with the rest of my life.”
-Isiah Thomas
This one really got me to thinking. What do I hope to be remembered as ? A good postal carrier ? A naturalist ? A creative photographer ? A revolutionary artist ? A brave writer ? A loyal friend ? Are there points taken away for being too passionate in my thinking ? How about for being without the appropriate filters ? I think mostly I’d like to be remembered as authentic. Gifts and flaws wrapped up in a single package.
How do you hope to be remembered?
This is a really good question! Thank you for that one; I’ll need a bit for that 🙂
There are as many ways to leave a legacy as there are people. It’s fascinating to explore your own. Here are two of many that you have already accomplished. “If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” —Benjamin Franklin Now, about that book about being a mail carrier . . .
Thank you ! What a great quote. Yes, once again you have me inspired to consider legacy. Oh, and about that book … I am floundering but hopeful. I need to find myself a group of writers who will be honest and unflinching. I don’t need anyone to drive the bus, I just need some help with the map !
You are an inspirational human being who loves to connect to all that is around you (both homo sapiens and not :-))
Thank you for this. One of my favorite quotes (which I can’t properly attribute) is “occupy the space you occupy”. If I can say I did this, with a full heart, I will be happily content.
I know this is not what you were getting at with the quote from Mr. Thomas, but as I am an old (very old) basketball fan it is ironic that Isiah would say such a thing. What I, and a heck of a lot of others, remember most about Isiah Thomas was that he led his team off the floor in the closing moments of the game when Michael Jordan and the Bulls beat them in 1991. This was not just a sudden, emotional reaction, as he and teammate Bill Laimbeer had concocted this plan before the game in the event that they lost.
I have to admit that this sent me down the rabbit-hole of NBA basketball. I didn’t recall the incident and it was interesting to read. It seems legacy, like life itself, is a rich tapestry of good, bad and ugly. Thanks for writing.
Well said Bonnie! Well said!! I hope to leave a glimmer, a smile in the hearts and minds of those whose paths I cross. Don’t miss me, just smile for having met me.
Even my Last Will & Testament is clear. I want no solemn gathering at my death. If my friends and family cannot celebrate – like an old Irish wake – I failed. 😘
Thank you my friend. I’m with you … our lives should be celebrated ! From the anniversary of our beginning, to our robust middle, to our unpredictable end. You make me smile often ♡
Then I have the same low bar. If occasionally someone thinks wistfully about me, and remembers a time when we laughed together, I’m good.
Would like to know what “passionate thinking” refers to, and an example!
Haha … really ? I think everything I do is with passion. I speak with it, walk with it, write with it, create with it. Maybe it is the thing some will remember in a negative way, but always I must live the width and the depth, not just the length ..
Maybe I am setting a low bar, but to be remembered at all would be an accomplishment. To be missed. THAT is all I hope for… to be missed. For someone to feel my absence as much as they felt my presence…*
I love this. I’m pretty sure one leaves lots of footprints and handprints on hearts in our short time here. I know that you certainly have in mine ♡
